Cherry Blossoms on Long Island
There are a couple of weeks every spring on Long Island when the cherry blossoms at The Planting Fields burst in to bloom. And for what feels like a minute, it becomes one of the most breathtaking backdrops for family photography in all of New York.
If you have been dreaming of spring family portraits surrounded by soft pink petals, and little ones running through the grass while Mom and Dad steal a quiet glance, this is your spot.
This post will walk you through everything you need to know about planning a spring cherry blossom family photo session at The Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay, NY. Timing the bloom, what to wear, how to prep the kids, and why this historic Long Island gem consistently produces some of the most gorgeous Long Island Family photos of the year are all covered.
Why The Planting Fields is so Special
The Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park is a 409 acre estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island. It is absolutely stunning in spring. Originally the private estate of William Roberson Coe featured manicured gardens, rolling lawns, a greenhouse, and dozens of ornamental trees including weeping cherries, Japanese cherries, and flowering magnolias.
For families with kids of any age, the wide open spaces are a huge plus. Little ones, like these handsome little guys, love having room to run, explore and just be kids. This relaxed fun atmosphere makes for more natural, joyful moments. No stiff poses. Just real moments with a swoon worthy backdrop.
- soft, diffused natural light filtred through the canopy of cherry blossoms
- Multiple distinct backdrops within walking distance
- Plenty of space for kids to move and play naturally
- Less crowded then well-known NYC spots like Brooklyn Botanical
When do the Cherry Blossoms Bloom?
Timing is everything with cherry blossom photography. The blooms are fleeting peaking for around 10-14 days. At The Planting fields, cherry blossoms generally peak in late April through early May, right when the weather warms up.
What to Wear for Cherry Blossoms Family Photos
Outfits can make or break a photo session. Here is how to dress your family for spring cherry blossom portraits that look cohesive, timeless, and genuinely beautiful.
For Mom
- A flowy midi dress in blush, sage, cream, or dusty blue photographs beautifully against pink blossoms. Avoid large patterns that compete with the scenery. Make sure you love what you are wearing and feel great in it
For Dad
- Keep it classic and coordinate with Mom’s palette. Jeans or trousers work. Choose a well fitting t shirt or sweater over a stuffy button-up. You want to look put together but not overdressed.
The Kids
- Play off the colors that mom and dad are wearing. I suggest warm neutrals and then tie in a color from mom’s dress or dad’s sweater. Layers add depth and visual interest to the photographs. Add a button up but leave it open, or maybe a sweater vest.
Final Notes
The Planting Fields is a non profit organization and a historic site. It charges a $100 permit fee for family photos. While it is an added cost to your session, it is an exceptionally beautiful location and goes to a great cause. The permit can be purchased prior to the scheduled session or on site that day.
