Isabella did it! Years of studying, clinical hours, late nights, and the kind of sustained dedication that most people cannot fully imagine. You see, she set out to become a physician assistant and she made it happen. And when she reached out about graduation photos on the Hofstra campus, I could not wait to get there with my camera.

Hofstra in the spring is something special. The trees are blooming, the flowers are out, and the whole campus has this energy of possibility and celebration that feels perfectly matched to the occasion. It was the ideal setting to mark a milestone this big.

Hofstra University’s campus in Hempstead is genuinely one of the most photogenic on Long Island. The mature trees, the brick architecture, the open quads, and the classic details of the buildings give a photographer so much to work with. In the spring it reaches a level of beauty that feels almost unfair when everything is blooming all at once.

For Isabella’s session we moved through several different areas of campus. We found spots that give us variety in the final gallery. Each location had its own feel and its own visual personality, and together they told the full story of her time at Hofstra.

Here is a look at some of the specific techniques and locations that gave Isabella’s gallery its range:

First of all, you cannot do a Hofstra graduation session without the lions. The iconic stone lion statues are one of the most recognized symbols of the university. The scale of the statues gives the images a sense of grandeur that feels exactly right for a graduate who just completed a demanding professional program. Classic, timeless, and unmistakably Hofstra.

Next, one of my favorite techniques for graduation portraits is using architectural doorways as natural frames for the subject. Hofstra’s campus has beautiful doorways and arched entrances that create a built-in frame around the graduate. It draws the eye directly to Isabella and gives the images a layered, editorial quality. The depth created by the architecture adds a richness to the photos that a plain open background simply cannot replicate.

We used several doorways throughout the session, each one slightly different in scale and detail, giving us a variety of looks while keeping that architectural elegance running through the gallery.

This is one of those techniques that surprises people when they see the results. By positioning Isabella near the large windows of campus buildings and working with the reflections in the glass, we created images that have a dreamy, almost doubled quality. The reflection adds a creative dimension to the portrait and the way the light plays through the glass is genuinely beautiful.

It is the kind of shot that does not look like a graduation photo in the traditional sense, which is exactly why people love it. It is unexpected and artistic while still being completely flattering.

The campus was at absolute peak spring beauty during Isabella’s session. We made full use of it. Blooming trees created soft canopies of pink and white above her. Flowering beds along the walkways added color and texture to the backgrounds. The spring foliage gave every outdoor shot a lush, vibrant quality that you simply cannot get any other time of year.

For a May graduation session, the timing could not have been more perfect. The blooms were out, the light was warm and golden in the late afternoon, and the whole campus felt alive in a way that matched exactly the energy Isabella brought to the session.

Isabella was a joy. She arrived relaxed, excited, and ready to have fun with the session. Physician assistant programs are demanding and rigorous, and you could feel the relief and pride radiating off her. She was not stressed about the photos or self-conscious in front of the camera. She was just genuinely happy, and genuine happiness is the easiest thing in the world to photograph beautifully.

We laughed a lot. We moved quickly through the campus catching the best light. And she trusted me completely when I pointed out a doorway or a window or a flowering tree and said this is the one. That kind of collaboration makes the work so much better.
