I am all about road trips! I love the planning, the anticipation, and the discovery of places I’ve never been before. As a creative, it always brings me fresh inspiration for my photography as well. My teenage daughter and I are planning a long and exciting road trip this summer. We are super excited and are hoping to visit several National Parks and other great locations in the West. My dad graciously gifted us with a pass to the National Parks for Christmas, and my husband added on a National Parks Passport to log all our visits.  We will be sure to keep you all posted and you can follow our adventures here on Instagram!

To get ready for this trip of a lifetime, we decided we need to take a few practice trips so we know what we are in for.  With the kids off school last week and the ridiculously good weather, we figured now was as good as time as any.  I had been wanting to visit Assateague National Seashore since I discovered this area a few years ago.  I mean, who doesn’t want to experience wild ponies on the beach?!  So, we loaded up the car with all the things and started our drive to Maryland.

This place was everything we had hoped it would.  No sooner than we entered the park, we saw two wild ponies that greeted us!  We didn’t get there until almost 5pm, and I was worried about getting the tent up before the sun went down.  Turns out the tent was a breeze to put together (thank goodness) and we had daylight to spare.  The campsite was right on the sand and the beach was just over the dunes, which made for the best campfire setting.  We had so much fun exploring the park and looking for the ponies.  We must have seen around twenty wild ponies and at one point, a group of about nine came right into our campground and even right into our campsite.  The rule is to stay 10 feet away from the ponies since they are wild and are known to kick and bite if they feel threatened.  We actually had to back away because they would come right up to us! This place is also a bird watchers dream and simply a great place to get some fresh air and spend some time by a campfire. If you are nearby, or even within driving distance, I cannot recommend this beautiful area enough. I am even more excited for our upcoming longer trip, and hope you stay tuned here to the blog for all our adventures!
